There is only one medication approved by the FDA for treatment of ALS. Studies showed that patients treated with riluzole, manufactured under the brand name Rilutek, remained in a more moderately affected health state significantly longer than placebo-treated patients. Research demonstrated a small beneficial effect on physical function but not on muscle strength. Riluzole is thought to extend life in ALS patients by about three months, though some studies suggest a gain of about a year.
